Many houses have a section of roof that is nearly flat: a porch, a dormer, an addition, a bay window top, or a section connecting two parts of the building. These areas are frequently the source of persistent problems, and the reason is that they cannot be roofed the same way as the rest of the house.
Why slope changes everything
A steep roof sheds water by gravity. Overlapping shingles work because water runs off before it can find a way between them.
As slope decreases, water moves more slowly, sits longer, and is more easily driven sideways or upward by wind. Below a certain pitch, overlapping materials simply do not work, because water has time to find the gaps.
Manufacturers specify minimum slopes for shingle products, and below those thresholds shingles will leak regardless of installation quality. Some products allow lower slopes with additional underlayment measures.
Installing standard shingles on a section below the minimum slope is a common fault, often carried out by a general contractor or a homeowner rather than a roofer, and it produces a leak that no amount of patching resolves.
What low-slope areas need instead
Low-slope and flat sections require membrane systems that form a continuous waterproof surface with sealed seams, rather than relying on overlap.
Single-ply membranes are widely used and are heat-welded or adhered at the seams to form a continuous sheet. Modified bitumen systems apply in layers with sealed laps. Built-up systems use multiple plies.
All of these share the important property: they seal rather than shed. Water sitting on them does not get through, which is what a low slope requires.
The choice between them depends on the size of the area, the detailing required, and what the surrounding roof is doing.
Drainage is the real design problem
A flat roof is never truly flat. It should be built with enough fall to move water to a drainage point, and where that fall is insufficient or uneven, water ponds.
Ponding is the enemy of low-slope roofing. Standing water accelerates membrane degradation, adds weight, and finds any weakness in a seam.
In a freezing climate, ponded water freezes and expands, which is considerably more damaging than standing water alone.
Where an existing flat section ponds persistently, the fix is usually building in additional slope rather than patching the membrane, and that is a more substantial piece of work.
The junctions
Low-slope sections almost always meet something: a wall, a steeper roof above, or a parapet.
These transitions are where failures concentrate. Membrane needs to be carried up vertical surfaces to an adequate height and terminated properly, with counter-flashing directing water out rather than behind.
Where a steep roof discharges onto a low-slope section, a large volume of water arrives at a concentrated point, and that area needs particular attention.
Common faults on residential low-slope areas
Shingles installed below minimum slope, as above.
Membrane terminated too low at a wall, so wind-driven rain or snow accumulation gets behind it.
Patching over a failed membrane repeatedly rather than addressing the underlying seam or slope problem.
Penetrations for vents or equipment sealed with mastic rather than properly flashed.
Inadequate or blocked drainage, particularly where a small flat roof drains through a single outlet that leaves fallen.
Snow and ice considerations
Low-slope sections do not shed snow, so they carry accumulated load through the winter.
They also sit where snow slides from steeper roofs above, which concentrates both weight and impact.
Ice formation at edges and around drainage points is common and blocks the drainage exactly when it is needed.
Getting it assessed
A persistent leak over a porch, addition, or dormer is worth having looked at by someone who works with low-slope systems rather than treating it as a shingle repair.

Repeated patching of a low-slope section that keeps leaking is usually a sign that the underlying issue is one of the last three.
